Road Reviews
Highway 89 - Tahoe West Perimeter
A well groomed road with good surface. It's comprised of long soft sweepers and some medium S-curves. It's incredibly scenic with beautiful Lake Tahoe on one side and quaint mounting communities and resorts on te other. A truly magestic area. The only drawback is that the summer tourist traffic is pretty heavy even on weekdays. (Day1)
Highway 28 - Tahoe North Perimeter
Very similar to the above 89, but ascending to a higher altitude. It provides an "ariel" view of Lake Tahoe. (Day1)
Highway 431 - Drop into Nevada
The road surface quality remains high (there was one area of resurfacing going on - not that it needed it). It provides a fast curvy remarkable decent to the Nevada side of the Sierras and high dry desert. I then winds through the "ol' West" to the historic city of Virgina City. (Day1)
Highway 88 - High Altitude Lakes
Another road with excellant surfacing. It's mainly sweet sweeping turns running past some of the most beautiful and serene high mountain lakes in the Western US. Carson Pass tops out at 7,377 feet. (Day 2)
Immigrant Trail Road
A long curvy lonely road winding through Californias Gold country. No traffic and enough medium speed turns to put a big smile on your face. Take you tent and make it a camping trip at one of it's pretty road side lakes. (Day 2)
Highway 4 - Ebetts Pass
This is a fabulously well kept high Sierra pass roadway - even it a major portion of it is only a car and a half in width. The narrowness addsa a whole new dimension to the ton of switchbacks, hairpins and tight S-curves. I'm sure it was beautiful too, but I was concentrating on the riding! As long as you keep the oncoming traffic (of whch there was very little) in mind, it's a truly fun ride. Ebetts Pass summit is 8,731 feet. (Day 3)
Highway 49 - The part south of Jamestown
New roadbed asphalt left slightly rough for traction is a highlight. The best way to describe this part of 49 is turns, more turns, tighter turns, sweeping turns, fast turns, slow turns, hairpin turns and then a few more turns. (Day 3)
Yosemite - 41, 140 and the Federal Park Roads
41 and 140 are awesome roads with most long sweeping curves perfect for fast speeds. The roads within Yosemite are fun tight and twisty. Their roadbed quality leavesa little to be desired, but that's not the attraction of Yosemite anyway. Don't miss Glacier Point Road either. (Day 4)
Highway 108 - Sonora Pass
Easily one of the best roads we traveled in all respects. The beauty, quality of road, scarseness of traffic, quantity and variety of turns are unsurpassed as a complete package! Other than a couple of patches of sand (spread during the winter for traction) the road was eminently ridable. The twisites seemed to last forever. Sonora Pass summit is 9,628 feet. (Day 5)
